We succeeded in growing high-quality single crystals of a heavy electron compound YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$. The electronic specific heat coefficient $$gamma$$ is determined to be 150 mJ/K$$^2cdot$$mol, which is consistent with the $$A$$ value of the electrical resistivity from Kadowaki-Woods relation. We succeeded in observing the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations. The dHvA frequencies and large cyclotron effective masses in YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ are highly different from those in a non-4$$f$$ reference compound YCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$. From these dHvA results, the heavy electron state of YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ is characterized by the large contribution of 4$$f$$-electrons to the volume of the Fermi surface and also to the strong enhancement of effective mass caused by the spin fluctuations.

Field-induced nematic phase in the spin ladder system with easy-axis anisotropy

The spin ladder system with the easy-axis anisotropy in magnetic field is theoretically investigated using the numerically exact diagonalization, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and the finite-size scaling analysis. It is found that the field-induced nematic phase appears above the critical field. In addition, there exists another critical field at which the quantum phase transition from the nematic phase to the conventional field-induced Tomonaga- Luttinger liquid phase occurs. The phase diagram on the coupling anisotropy versus magnetization plane is given by the numerical diagonalization. Furthermore, a typical magnetization curve calculated by the DMRG is presented.

In order to diagnose the quantum critical behaviour in heavy fermion systems, the Gaussian spin-spin relaxation time $$T_{2G}$$ determined by NMR spin-echo decay measurements is found to be useful. Combined with the spin-lattice relaxation time $$T_1$$, an exponent $$phi$$ of quantity $$T_1T/T_{2G}^2 sim T^{phi}$$ is predicted to be sensitive to the type of quantum criticality. In fact in heavy fermion USn$$_3$$ near the quantum critical point, $$T_1T/T_{2G}^2$$ is found to be constant as expected for the $$3D$$-SDW magnetic instability.
